Online Virtual Light Labs
The following virtual light lab online applications are excellent resources for experimenting with and learning about lighting color theory, textural lighting, lighting direction, and combining lights from various directions and the effect that they will produce on an object. Without needing to set up physical equipment, these tools help you to visualize, understand and explain the relationship between artistic intention and technical tools. These tools were created by Matt Kizer at Plymouth State University.
Digital Light Plots
LXSeries is a set of software tools for lighting design. We use these applications in the SFS Theatre Office to assist in tasks such as drawing light plots, compiling lighting data into reports, visualizing the design in a 3D environment, and more. LXFree and LXBeams are sibling products (one free and one paid) that are both excellent applications. In addition, they have an iPad App called LXBeams2Go that allows us to pull up a lighting plot on an iPad while working around the theatre and work with the file and information management.
LXBeams is a professional application for creating lighting designs. LXBeams combines drawing a light plot with editing information associated with the design. It produces reports, displays beams, and can render a 3D view. LXBeams shares data with applications such as SketchUp, imports/exports AutoCAD DXF files, receives DMX, and sends OSC. There is a limited FREE application for drawing light plots called LXFree. It also produces reports. Click the image to visit the resource.
Figure53 - QLab Software
We use QLab software extensively in the SFS Theatres for media playback and show control. All of our control booths are equipped with an Apple iMac computer running the full version of QLab 4. We use the software to playback audio and video files, as well as send MIDI and MSC show control signals to our lighting and audio consoles to control a number of parameters that allow us to synchronize and execute complicated control sequences with accuracy and precision every time. We also use the software for projection mapping effects and and creating multi-layered audio effects. Coupled with QLab Remote, we can control the QLab show file and execute cues and cue sequences remotely from anywhere in the theatre.
